Swing to Labour in Local Elections of 6.6% and victory in Parks

Swindon Labour candidates averaged 31.0% of the vote in the 2010 local election compared to only 24.4% in 2008.  Mark Dempsey stunningly captured a seat in Parks ward, and newcomer Rochelle Russell comfortably beat off all challengers, including the BNP to win Gorse Hill for Labour.  Overall the Tory share of the vote dropped by 11.3%.

All through the Borough Labour candidates did well – Councillors Kevin Small (Western) and Bob Wright (Central)  markedly increased the Labour majority in their seats, while Joe Tray (St Philips) came within 51 votes of unseating his Conservative rival.  Mareen Caton reduced the Tory majority in Moredon to 194 and Sarah Bush increased the Labour share of the vote by 12.3% in Dorcan.

New Labour candidates in North Swindon did exceptionally well – with Jennifer Millin (Covingham and Nythe) and Nigel Chalk (St Margarets) both achieving 30% of the vote despite increases in the support for Lib Dems.  Laura Baker fought a close contest in Penhill – only losing by 116 votes  to Andy Harrison (who this month is in the Lib Dems).

In South Swindon Matt Rhodes (Freshbrook & Grange Park), Sandra Parsons (Wroughton & Chisledon) and Carol Heavens (Shaw and Nine Elms)  all increased the Labour share of the vote by more than 10%.

Congratulations to all hard working Labour candidates in Swindon and to party members and supporters who campaigned on their behalf.  Thanks also to the voters!  These results will be the start of a much needed increase in the size of the Labour Group on Swindon Council!
