Playing Politics with People’s Lives

Next week Tory Councillors will meet to rubber stamp a decision to remove speed cameras from the streets of Swindon.  This follows months of heated debate over the potential dangers of such a move.

Labour spokesman on Transport, Derique Montaut, said, “if the Tories nod through this decision they will be making a grave mistake and it will be the people of Swindon who will have to pay.  The fact that speed cameras save lives has been proven time and again over the past years, but the Tories are too caught up in their political games to listen.”

“Already the statements coming out from the Tories are contradictory.  Apparently speed cameras are ineffective because fewer accidents are now caused due to excessive speed…  Has Cllr. Greenhalgh ignored the idea that speed cameras may be slowing traffic down?  Cllr. Greenhalgh then tells us that the council will target the education of young drivers who are more likely to be involved in accidents.  If you examine the very report that Cllr. Greenhalgh refers to you will see that these drivers are the most likely to use excessive speed and around 1 in 4 accidents involving under 30s have speed as a contributory factor.[1]”

“Labour want to work with the Conservatives on road safety measures, and are happy to look at a variety of effective road safety initiatives to ensure the safety of people on Swindon’s roads.  Sadly, this whole review was started as a political ruse to embarrass the government over road safety funding within Swindon.  As the debate has gone on it is clear that, not only does Swindon benefit from Government funding on road safety, the number of accidents have been reduced due to the introduction of speed cameras.  Cllr. Greenhalgh has left himself in a political hole and he is too arrogant to admit that he is wrong.  If the Conservatives support these proposals next week then they will be guilty of playing with Swindon people’s lives.”
