I’m delighted to have been selected by the Covingham and Nythe Labour Party to fight the ward for Labour on May 5th 2011.  I’m a retired Building Control Surveyor with 32 years Local Government service.  Currently I work as a part-time administrator and am a member of Unison.  I have lived in the Ward for 31 years.

If elected I will:

Maintain a constant vigil on the Eastern Development Area (EDA) proposals to prevent traffic and flooding problems to existing roads and housing.

Fight to keep Covingham Library at its present level of service and opening hours.

Work with the Stratton, Covingham and Nythe neighbourhood policing team to combat crime and disorder.

Campaign against cuts to the services for the most vulnerable members of our society, the elderly and children

Campaign to have drains and waterways regularly cleaned and maintained to prevent flooding.

Labour won’t make promises we cannot keep. Following the MPs expenses scandal and the Tories broken promises both nationally and locally we understand that that politicians need to show more honesty and respect towards the public. Swindon Labour is not going to make promises it cannot keep.  If elected to control the Council, Labour would:

Increase the road repair & resurfacing budget to end the town’s reputation as “pothole city”.

Protect front line services for the elderly and vulnerable.

Retain the fortnightly refuse and recycling collections.

Introduce a Community Payback scheme whereby local residents get to have a say in the punishment of anti social behaviour offenders in their area.

Congratulations to Jennifer Millin the new Labour candidate for Covingham and Nythe who achieved a very commendable 30.9% of the vote – a significant increase from the 24.8% achieved in 2008.

Speaking after the count Jennifer said:

I’m delighted to have received so many votes and thank the voters of Covingham and Nythe for their trust in me, and for increasing the Labour vote in the ward by 6.3%. Â I am disappointed by the result in the Westminster election however. Â Victor was an excellent candidate and defended the record of the Labour Government in bringing us through the worst recession for 50 years with comparatively low unemployment and an economy forecast by the OECD to be heading for much faster growth than the rest of Europe.

I’m surprised that electors didn’t remember the 80s  - when much of our industry was sold off and unemployment  broke all records.  Now I fear we face an unprecedented period of austerity.  I hope I’m wrong but we could be faced by a 20-24% increase in VAT, up to £2.00 a litre for fuel,  no more free bus passes in Swindon for pensioners,  no more winter heating allowance, and no more child tax credits. Electors of Covingham & Nythe will look back on the time of prosperity that Labour brought to us during the past 13 years.  They’ll see that the Labour Government more than doubled the funding given to Swindon Borough Council, and saw much of it frittered away on vanity projects.

I hope to serve the people of Covingham as Labour party co-ordinator in the ward and urge you to get in touch with me if there are any issues I can help with or if there is any assistance you can give to Labour’s next campaign.

Hello, I would like to introduce myself. Â My name is Jennifer Millin and I am your local Labour party candidate standing in the Swindon Borough elections on 6th May 2010. Â Â I am asking for your support to be your local Labour Party Councillor for the Covingham and Nythe ward.

I have worked for over 25 years in local government, and lived in the heart of Swindon for a large part of that time so I have a clear understanding of the problems we have here in this town.

One of which is the escalating problem of anti-social behaviour. Â I have experienced this first hand, so I understand only too well that this is one of the big worrying issues here.

Anti-social behaviour is both destructive and corrupting. Â It is not only a self-fulfilling prophecy for the perpetrator, but also a destructive and corrupting influence for the community as a whole, Â effecting the quality if life for all of society both young and old.

I believe that the lack of youth provision for both younger and older teenagers must be a major contributor to this increasing problem. Our youth need to be stimulated and have a focus, so as your elected councillor one of my first priorities will be to bring together the various agencies involved in youth culture to see what can be done to improve and expand facilities for these young members of our society.

Another concern is the effort experienced by the disabled members of our community in getting around the town and this ward. Â As a person with walking difficulties myself I appreciate that mobility for the disabled in Swindon can be a problem. Uneven pavings, rutted and narrow pavements, kerbs and untreated slippery surfaces – all of these cause real problems for the disabled. As your councillor I will be assessing where these problems are in Covingham and Nythe then putting pressure on our Tory controlled council to make repairs and improvements.

Although these issues are a high priority for me, they are by no means the only concerns that I shall be addressing if I am elected your councillor.  To this end I would be  pleased to hear of any other community problems that you feel need addressing.  As your local councillor rest assured I will do my very best to try to resolve as many of these as I am able.

Victor Agarwal was selected on 9th January in the first round of voting by Labour Party members in North Swindon. He came top of an initial application list of 17 candidates.  This is a testament to Victor’s energy, sincerity and intellectual capability.

Victor has a BSc. Hons in History and Business Studies and has studied at universities in Britain, Denmark and the USA. he is an airline manager and has extensive contact with and knowledge of the world of work.

Michael Wills was not involved in the selection process; however he has since been in contact with Victor Agarwal and offered him all the help he wants. Victor said  ”Michael has been an excellent constituency MP and I hope to follow in his footsteps and make the people of Western proud of me too. Only with a Labour MP and a Labour government can we effect further real change for the better in North Swindon. With a strong Labour MP we can attract new jobs, improve our education system and address social inequalities in the area. I believe we can do all these things – but only if you elect a Labour MP to build on the excellent achievements of Michael Wills.

As Labours New Candidate for North Swindon I will:

always speak up for you and put North Swindon first

live in the constituency and be a full-time MP

fight for healthcare, jobs and good education in North Swindon

be available to all my constituents
