Mark VINER, Maura CLARKE, Wayne SMITH are the Labour Candidates for the new Haydon Wick Ward – which now includes Bryony Way, Woodhall Park and Purton Road. Their main concerns are lack of school places, loss of £4m Section 106 money and the need for transport improvements…

I am delighted to been selected by Abbey Meads Labour Party to stand in the local elections on the 5th May. I live in Oakhurst and work locally in Swindon. As  someone just starting a family I understand the worries of what the future is going to bring.

This week Government informed  local authorities of their funding settlements, and the Council hailed this as  “better than expected†– with cuts of ‘only’ 2.4%. However the Eric Pickles’ percentages are based on overall Council income – including income from Council Tax.  The ‘formula grant’ from Government to Swindon is actually being cut by more than 19% over 2 years.

Ed emphasised that enterprise and job creation are fundamental to the good economy and good society and that the Labour Party understands this at its core. Labour wants to expand the economy and help Swindon and Moredon grow out of the recession not plunge it back to 12% unemployment like we had under Thatcher. Please remember that at the Moredon by-election on Thursday 4th November.

While canvassing today in Moredon I met a man who blamed the last Labour Government for the lost of his job, and the trouble he was having finding a new one.  I reminded him of the PriceWaterhouse Coopers report published last week which estimated that the Chancellors £84billion in cuts, due to be announced on the 20th, would cause 1 million job losses!  Economic experts agree that Labour’s policies held job losses 800,000 below where they would have been if the Tories had been in power during the recession. Labour would make cuts – but only half those planned by the Tories and not till next year when the economy is safe.

Hello, I would like to introduce myself. Â My name is Jennifer Millin and I am your local Labour party candidate standing in the Swindon Borough elections on 6th May 2010. Â Â I am asking for your support to be your local Labour Party Councillor for the Covingham and Nythe ward.
I have worked for over 25 years in local government, and lived in the heart of Swindon for a large part of that time so I have a clear understanding of the problems we have here in this town.
One of which is the escalating problem of anti-social behaviour. Â I have experienced this first hand, so I understand only too well that this is one of the big worrying issues here.
Anti-social behaviour is both destructive and corrupting. Â It is not only a self-fulfilling prophecy for the perpetrator, but also a destructive and corrupting influence for the community as a whole, Â effecting the quality if life for all of society both young and old.
I believe that the lack of youth provision for both younger and older teenagers must be a major contributor to this increasing problem. Our youth need to be stimulated and have a focus, so as your elected councillor one of my first priorities will be to bring together the various agencies involved in youth culture to see what can be done to improve and expand facilities for these young members of our society.
Another concern is the effort experienced by the disabled members of our community in getting around the town and this ward. Â As a person with walking difficulties myself I appreciate that mobility for the disabled in Swindon can be a problem. Uneven pavings, rutted and narrow pavements, kerbs and untreated slippery surfaces – all of these cause real problems for the disabled. As your councillor I will be assessing where these problems are in Covingham and Nythe then putting pressure on our Tory controlled council to make repairs and improvements.
Although these issues are a high priority for me, they are by no means the only concerns that I shall be addressing if I am elected your councillor.  To this end I would be  pleased to hear of any other community problems that you feel need addressing.  As your local councillor rest assured I will do my very best to try to resolve as many of these as I am able.
